Day Itinerary Curriculum
Day 1 School arrives approx 11:30am, brief orientation to the area, lunch, set up tents, exploratory day hike, meal prep/eat/clean up, evening program

Electronics stay on the vehicle no phones, ipods, etc.

No chewing gum at any time.

Simple welcome and site briefing

Sanitation and hand washing, food/water/sun/camp boundaries

Keeping the area and bathrooms clean and cleaning up after selves

Food prep and eating (santitation, food waste, where's the garbage, etc

Tents: site selection, set up, tent rules (only your tent group in your tent, no shoes/food of any kind); set up tents

Packing for outings - what to bring

Afternoon hike to stretch and get acquainted with the desert. Plants/animals to be aware of, plants/animals to know; intro to desert ecosystems and desert adaptations. (Bring a few field guides and binoculars)

Arrange meal groups... meal prep... afternoon activity for those not doing meal

Evening program: goal setting for the week (small groups possibly)

 

Day 2 Rock Climbing and desert exploration. Aim to depart camp by 8:30, return by 4:30, lunch at the parking lot for the climbing site

Breakfast, packing for the day (gone all day)

At climbing site: break into two groups, A/B. A climbs, B does Wonderland and Barker Dam loop, aprox 3 hours

Climbing: Intro to the climbing safety system; harness use, helmet use, intro to belaying and lowering, lots of climbing - students do the belaying. We'll clip them in rather than tie figure 8 but teach the figure 8 as a large group in the pm. After a round or two of climbing we'll do a clinic on movement skills.

Exploration group: intro to desert ecology and common plants/animals of the desert; human history of the area, petroglyph tour.

Groups meet for lunch, switch

Same climbing/exploring plan in pm

Evening program: night vision and astronomy

 

Day 3 All day exploration of the Wonderland of Rocks

Evening program: wrap up; thoughts on the week; need more here

Day 4 Pack up and depart; Cave of the winds before heading home

Your packed bag is your ticket to breakfast

Cave of the winds takes about an hour and a half.

We could, alternatively, do more climbing.
