Clothing and Equipment List for Bishop Trip

Please note: for the backcountry part of the trip all the student's personal equipment must fit in their backpack. This includes a subset of the clothing on this list, their sleeping bag, and pad.

Footwear:

     Lightweight hiking boots

An additional pair of tennis shoes are needed for walking around camp. Please note that the only time it is ok to go barefoot on the trip is in a tent!

     2 pr socks

Clothing: Not all of this will go on the "backcountry" part of the trip

     2 pr shorts

2 pr sweats or pants – loose and comfortable

2 long sleeved shirts or turtlenecks

     2 T-shirts

     1 pair long underwear

1 wool or fleece sweater or sweatshirt of synthetic or fleece material

1 warm jacket (ski jacket type - the more compact and light-weight the better!!)

1 set rain jacket and pants – coated nylon or gortex (waterproof. Please do not skimp on raingear. Each student MUST have WATERPROOF pants and jacket.)

1 pr warm gloves or mittens

1 hat – wool or fleece

Sun Protection:

     1 hat with visor

     1 pr sunglasses

     1 bandannas

1 sunscreen and lip balm, SPF 15 or higher

Sleeping Gear:

1 warm sleeping bag (no cotton!) with stuff sack. The lowest temperature we expect would be 25ºF. Most likely it will be in the mid 40’s at night.

1 sleeping pad for underneath sleeping bag. Foam pads work fine and are better than inflatable pads unless the inflatable is a Thermarest. Please do not bring a large air mattress type pad!

1 tent (if you already have one – let us know!). Please do not bring tents that are tall enough to stand up in. It can get windy and these big tents are very difficult to anchor in a wind storm. Look for good quality backpacking tents like Sierra Deisgns (but not their models that are tall enough to stand up in), North Face or REI to name a few. If your student brings a tent that the trip leaders feel is inappropriate a rental will be provided and the family will be charged for this rental.

Equipment:

1 duffel bag for all your gear. All your equipment should fit inside of one duffel bag.

2 canteens or water bottles – the kind that won’t break or leak. Nalgene is a good brand, available at most outdoor stores. Please avoid narrow mouth bottles as they are difficult to refill. 2 Quarts capacity total is required. (put your name on them!)

1 camp mug (plastic or other non breakable material)

1 wash-up kit (keep it simple – include washcloth, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste)

1 flashlight or headlamp with new batteries. If you are buying new a headlamp is preferred. The new small ones are great! Please don't bring one of those giant D-cell flashlights.

1 journal, notebook pen and pencil (bring your class journal)

1 backpack capable of holding lunch, water bottle, extra clothes and notebook. 3,500 to 4,000 cubic inches is ideal. Please make sure this pack is of a variety that you can comfortably carry all day long.

__OR 1 larger pack (that could double as your duffel bag) for the backcountry portion. Though we are caching camp we will still need to carry all our personal gear including sleeping bag and pad. The cache will be our food and cooking gear, not our personal gear.

2 large trash bags (extra rain protection for your gear)

1 pair extra glasses (if you wear them)

2 sets of any required prescription medications if required – labeled, in original bottles, in separate Ziploc bags. A staff person will be the keeper and dispensor of any medications.

Optional: But Highly Recommended

     Camera and film

     Reading book

Items which are not allowed: candy, gum, food of any kind, money, any electronics (radio, phone, walkman, games, etc are ok in vehicles but must be left there during the trip.), knives, magazines, over the counter medications.

Many items on this list are available to rent or purchase at Adventure 16, or you can buy equipment at REI, Sport Chalet, Supply Sergeant or Big 5. Let us know if you would like to borrow equipment and we will do our best to accommodate you.

It is recommended that students pack their duffel bags themselves so they know where all their equipment is located.
